Maybe you’ve only just started on low fodmap or are a seasoned pro…?
Travelling with IBS can be a scary concept either way, sometimes it even stops people travelling at all!!
As you will probably know, IBS is the bain of many people’s lives. An estimated 58 million people in the U.S. ALONE have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
If you have chronic IBS ( which I have struggled with for years ) you will know the social anxiety it causes.
You might not know, but according to the International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders, a large majority of IBS sufferers are scared to travel because they find dealing with their symptoms just ‘too stressful.’
According to Sheila Crowe, MD, gastroenterologist and spokeswoman for the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), “There’s definitely a benefit to taking a vacation, but people need to plan it, so that it’s not too stressful.
When it came to my own experience, it took a hell of a lot of planning, and as you can read in my story, I could have really done with a guide that told me how to prepare better to make sure I was confident whilst travelling away from home.
I’ve travelled a fair amount with my IBS and it’s been a real struggle. I’ve met others on my travels who also suffer with chronic pain.
I started researching into IBS about 6 years ago and when I decided to travel, I was determined not to let my tummy troubles hold me back.
You shouldn’t either!
Firsty, I started researching how to travel on the low fodmap diet ( which I had been following for a few years, and knew exactly what I could, and couldn’t tolerate)
What I realised was…
NOBODY KNEW HOW.
The same useless information was just regurgitated on EVERY BLOG.
There was no real info on how to prep, what food was safe or not in each country, let alone how to order it.
My only option, was to just do it and find out for myself!
I became an expert in what ESSENTIALS I needed for my next trip and what I would do in emergencies. I even quickly became awesome at communicating in different languages to servers and friends about what I could and couldn’t eat.
Suddenly I realised, I was doing ok. My IBS was under control. All because I had put my own personal plan in place.
I couldn’t keep it to myself of course….
